Greenurbia: Our New Housing Future?

Green Housing FutureThere’s a new buzz word hovering over our real estate bubble: Greenurbia. A little bit eco-friendly, a little bit urban, and you’ve got a new term that explains what the house-dwelling future of tomorrow is going to look and feel like.

The future of the economy – the year 2050 to be exact – will have not just suburbia thriving but being more eco-conscious than ever with tons of energy-efficient homes, better fuel economy commuter cars and a huge flux of telecommuting. Author Joel Kotkin coins this new area as “greenurbia” in his new book, The Next Hundred Million: America 2050.

The Green Movement appears divided about the topic of any new kind of radical building growth or development, as this New Geography article states. In the case of greenurbia, it isn’t likely consumers — green conscious or not — are going to give up a way of life they are used to. Going green to some can mean as minimal sacrifice as possible. So proposing a radical re-engineering of society, including all-new housing or living styles, does not work. Environmentalists would do better to embrace a vision of a greener cul-de-sac, so to speak, allowing for the same old living but in an environmentally responsible way.
