Financial Advice for Couples

Personal Finance for CouplesJust in time for Valentine’s Day comes the sweet with the sour: Couples who handle money together stay together because it is estimated that money issues are the driving force in 90% of all divorces.

Yet psychologists say than many couples would rather talk about anything else before money, as stated in this financial planning for couple’s article on About.com. We’ve offered several strategies, along with financial advisors and websites, on how to create money bliss in your marriage or partnership.

Share your visions about money. It’s a good idea to do this early on in the relationship, or at least around the time you start talking about moving in or taking it to the next level – a level that involves merging coinage. This includes outlining both savings and spending plans. Talk about money as it is linked to your goals, something your better half has dreams about, too.

Open your heart and statements.
The right time to explain any hidden consumer debt is right now. And before it gets worse and starts to affect your partner’s good credit or bank account. Asking your partner how they want to handle financial situations is one of one of the most important questions you should ask before you say I do.

Agree there will be times you will disagree. It isn’t realistic to try to monitor or micromanage your spouse’s every money move. Decide on mutual rules, such as thinking 48-hours before making a purchase over $100, as recommended from Elizabeth Warren, author of The Two-Income Trap. So if your partner comes home with new golf clubs, trust his integrity or thought process and he’ll do the same.

Have a meeting of the minds and heart – once a month.
Even if you are both in complete agreement how to run the family bank, you are still obligated to hold informal financial meetings once a month. Do what most people do when the work has been done and are ahead of the curve – take part in an online quiz. This one is created by Suze Orman and it checks for financial compatibility.
